Deities - Valkyries
Sigrún (from the Old Norse: Rune of Victory) is a valkyrie of Norse mythology. Its history is reported in Helgakvida Hundingsbana I and Helgakvida Hundingsbana II, in Edda in verse. The original editor remarks that it was Sváva reborn.
The second poem, Helgakviða Hundingsbana II ("the ballad of Helgi, the slayer of Hundingr"), narrates that the two characters were reborn, Helgi as son of King Sigmundr and Sváva as Sigrún ("rune of victory"), daughter of King Hogni (and likewise a valkyrja).
In addition to continuing to be lovers, Sigrún retains his impetus to protect the beloved. The moment Helgi assembled a large fleet to go to the Frekastéin region, a huge storm threatened the fleet. Nine Valkyrjor (among them Sigrún) appear flying and save the expedition. Also in another Edic poem narrating the narrative of Helgi as son of Sigmundr (Helgakviða Hundingsbana I), Óðinn's maidens protect the king at the moment of a dangerous sea crossing and in the course of a battle.Continuing the narrative, Helgi is killed by his brother-in-law. The latter, named Dag, had planned to avenge the hero for the death of his father, and with the aid of the spear Gungnir (delivered by the god Óðinn himself) mortally hits Helgi. Arriving at Valhöll, Helgi became the chief of the Einherjar. Some time later, when visiting the tomb of the beloved, Gúdrun is able to contact him and know of his fate as an odynic intermediary. He lived a few more years, before dying and reincarnated as another valkyrja named Kára ("curly hair").
The hero is reborn as Helgi Haddingiaskati.
Story
The word valkyrie derives from the old Norse valkyrja (plural valkyrjur), which is composed of two words; the noun valr (which refers to the dead in battle) and the verb kjósa (meaning "to choose"). Together, they mean "choosing the dead." The old Norse valkyrja is a cognate of the old English wælcyrge. Other terms for valkyries include óskmey (old Norse "desired servant"), appear in the poem Oddrúnargrátr and Óðins meyjar (old Norse "servant of Odin"), appears in Nafnaþulur. Óskmey may be related to the name of Odin Óski (Old Norse, meaning approx. "Ombudsman's wish"), referring to the fact that Odin hosted dead warriors in Valhalla.
The original valkyries were Brunhilda ("battle correspondent"), Sigrun ("rune of victory"), Skogul ("battle"), Prour ("power"), Herfjotur ("war fetter"), Raogrior god "), Gunnr (" battle lance "), Skuld (" that which transforms "), Sigrdrifa (" storm of victory "), Svava, Hrist (" the agitator "), Skeggjold "), Hildr (" battle "), Hlokk (" battle crash "), Goll (" battle cry "), Randgrior (" peace shield "), Reginleif that causes tumult ") and Gondul (" enchanted wand "or" werewolf ").
