Tritão

Gods - Greek mythology

Triton in Greek mythology, is a sea god, son of Poseidon and Amphitrite, usually depicted with human head and trunk and fish tail. He is male representation of a mermaid. He is known as the king of the seas. He is a faithful servant of his parents, acting as his messenger and calming the waters of the sea so that the carriage of Poseidon slip safely. For this he uses cowbells as a musical instrument, thus producing a soothing song.

Story

Triton, son of Poseidon and Amphitrite, was a marine demigod; the upper part of his body up to the kidneys was a man swimming, the bottom part was a long-tailed fish. He was the herald of the sea god, whom he always preceded, announcing his arrival to the sound of a recurve shell; sometimes it is brought to the surface of the waters, other times it appears in a car pulled by blue horses.

It was depicted in the painting of Greek vessels sometimes bearded, sometimes young. He had a shell that was used as a trumpet in order to tame the waves at his will. He lived with his parents in the depths of the seas and served as a messenger to Poseidon.

The poets attribute to Triton another office besides that of Poseidon's herald: to calm the waves and to stop the storms. Thus, Ovid says that Poseidon, wanting to cease the waters of the flood, sends Triton to sound the horn, at whose sound the waters withdraw.

Virgil reports that when Poseidon wanted to appease the storm that Juno had excited against Aeneas, Triton, in company with a Nereida, made every effort to save the stranded ships.

The poets admit several Tritons, with the same functions and the same figure.
