Samson

Heroes - Humans

(In Arabic: شمشون, Shamshūn / Samsun), or (in Greek: Σαμψών, Sampson) of שִׁמְשׁוֹן, Shím'shôn, Tiberian Hebrew: Šimšôn meaning "little sun", or "son of the sun" according to his description in the Hebrew Bible, was a Nazirite, the son of Manoah, born of a barren mother (Judges 13: 2) and who led the Israelites against the Philistines.

He was of the tribe of Dan and was the thirteenth judge of Israel, succeeding Abdon. The Bible reports that Samson was the judge of the people of Israel for twenty years (Judges 16:31), approximately from 1177 bc to 1157 bc, being the successor of Abdon and the predecessor of Eli.

Biography

He distinguished himself by being a superhuman force which, according to the Bible, was supplied to him by the Holy Spirit of God as long as he obeyed the God of hosts (see article on the Nazirite). He easily subjugated his enemies and produced achievements unattainable by ordinary men, such as tearing a new lion in half, facing an entire army, and killing a multitude of Philistines (after discovering he was deceived) to pick up their clothes by paying a bet. (Judges 14: 6, 15:14, 16:23).

According to the biblical text, Samson fell in love with Delilah, a woman of the Philistine people, who betrayed him to the rulers of their nation, after learning about their hair, which were the source of their strength over -human. After being blinded by the Philistines, Samson became a slave.

Samson died sacrificing himself to take revenge on his enemies, having cried out to God for the restitution of his strength for a final and definitive act.
