Gilgamesh

Kings - Humans

Gilgamesh was a semi-legendary King of Sumer, best known for being the main character in the epic of Gilgamesh, a Mesopotamian epic preserved in tablets written with cuneiform characters.

According to the List of Kings of Sumer, an ancient Sumerian text dating from the Bronze Age, Gilgamesh was the fifth king of the first Uruk dynasty, dating to approximately between 2800-2500 BC. Still according to the list, he was the son of a "demon" or "ghost" (the meaning of the word in the text is uncertain) and his reign would have lasted 126 years. His son and successor, Ur-Nungal, reigned 30 years. Another document, the Tummal Inscription, points to Gilgamesh as the second rebuilder of Tummal's temple, dedicated to the goddess Ninlil, in the holy city of Nipur.

After his reign, Gilgamesh was considered the most illustrious predecessor of the Sumerian kings, becoming the object of legends and poems and being venerated as a deity. Several accounts of his deeds are known in a fragmentary manner from the second millennium BC, the earliest in Sumerian and the most recent in Akkadian. In one of these legends, Gilgamesh confronts and overcomes the Aga, king of Kish, consolidating the independence of Uruk. This legend thus reflects the struggles for supremacy between Mesopotamian cities at the beginning of Sumerian history. In the history of the fight against Aga one of the most outstanding warriors of Gilgamesh is Enkidu, that later is portrayed like friend of the hero in Epic of Gilgamesh. Gilgamesh was the Hero King, the oldest name (from when the world was only one).
