Erímanto's Boar

Creatures - Animals

Erimanto's boar, it was a ferocious animal that always descended the mountain ruining the plantations, terrifying and destroying everything that found its way. It had this name because it lived in the famous Erimanto, a dark mountain in the Arcadia.

He was an anthropophagous monster, could cause seismic tremors, and with his fangs he was able to uproot a corpulent tree and tear up men or animals that stood in his way.

Heracles was sent to capture him as one of his Twelve Works. Designated by petty king Eurystheus, the hero, in his fourth job, was to take the boar alive to Mycenae.

Hercules, with the force of his screams, drove the beast out of its hiding place at the top of the mountain, chased it through the snow that covered the region, and tired it until it could be captured. After that, Heracles placed the boar on his shoulders and led him to the palace of Eurystheus in Mycenae. Upon seeing the monster, Eurystheus was filled with dread and hid in a large amphora which he kept in the palace to hide himself in case of danger.

The symbolism of the boar is directly related to the hyperborean tradition, with that nostalgic paradise lost, where the Island of the Blessed are located. In this approach the boar would configure spiritual power, as opposed to the bear, symbol of temporal power. Thus conceived, the symbol of the boar would be related to the solitary retreat of the druid in the forests: it feeds on the glans of the oak, a sacred tree, and the javaline with its nine pups digs the earth around the apple tree, the tree of immortality.
