Synthesis
Sun Tzu (544 BC - 496 BC) was a Chinese general, strategist and philosopher. Sun Tzu is best known for his work The Art of War, composed of 13 chapters of military strategies.
Sun Tzu, also spelled like Sunzi, was a historical figure whose existence is questioned by several historians. His birth name was Sun Wu, Sun being his last name, and Tzu a title meaning "Master." Traditionally, Sun Tzu has lived in China's Spring and Autumn Period (722 BC - 481 BC) as a general of King Hu Lu. More recent historians, admitting their existence, date their work, The Art of War, from the Warring States Period (476 BC - 221 BC), based on the war descriptions of this book, and by the similarity of the text's form of writing with other works done at the beginning of the Warring States period.
More traditional historians believe that his descendant, Sun Pin, also wrote a treatise on military tactics entitled The Art of War by Sun Pin. Both are mentioned as Sun Tzu in the traditional Chinese texts, and some historians believed that Sun Wu was indeed Sun Pin until the discovery of his works in 1972. During the nineteenth and twentieth centuries, Sun Tzu's War Art, won great popularity being adapted in practice by the Western world, continuing its work to influence the cultures and policies of both the Asian and Western worlds.
The Art of War (Traditional Chinese: 孫子兵 法; simplified Chinese: 孙子兵 法; pinyin: Sūn zǐ Bīng Fǎ) is attributed to Sun Tzu. It represents a philosophy of warfare to manage conflicts and win battles. It is accepted as a masterpiece in strategy and frequently quoted and referred to by theoreticians and generals, since it was published, translated and distributed throughout the world. [
There are many theories about when it will have been written and what the identity of the author or authors, but, archaeological discoveries have proved that this work will have the present content only from the beginning of the Han Dynasty (206 a.C. - 220) As it is impossible to prove conclusively the date of completion of these texts, before those dates, the different theories about its author and the date of the work, may never be resolved. Some scholars believe that, contrary to popular belief, this work contains not only the original author's texts but also commentaries and explanations of military philosophers such as Li Quan and Du Mu.
Of the military texts written before Chinese unification in the second century BC, six survived, including The Art of War. In the middle of the Song Dynasty, these six works were compiled with a text of the Tang Dynasty in a work designated by Seven Military Classics. As the centerpiece of this work, The Art of War created the foundations of orthodox military theory in China. To illustrate this perspective, the reading of this book was obligatory to pass the examinations necessary for imperial appointment to military positions.
