Sir Percíval

  • Knights of the Round Table

There are numerous versions about the origin of Percival. In most of the stories he is of noble origin, being the son of Pellinor, a valiant knight and king of Listenois. His mother, usually anonymous, plays an important role in the story. She will live in an isolated forest, to prevent her son from becoming a knight. His sister, bearer of the Holy Grail is called Dandrane. In the versions of the story in which Percival is Pellinor's son, his brothers are Tor, Agloval, Lamorat and Dornar.

After the death of Percival's father, his mother takes him to the isolation of the forest, causing him to ignore, up to the age of fifteen, how men behave. One day, while training with his sword in the forest, the young Percival finds five knights in armor so brilliant that he takes them for angels. Having glimpsed this scene, he acquires a desire to become a knight himself, and goes to the court of King Arthur. There, after being an excellent warrior, he is invited to join the Knights of the Round Table.

In the older tales, Percival participates in the quest for the Holy Grail. In Chrétien's version of Troyes he encounters the injured King Fisher and observes the Grail, but refrains from posing the question that would bring the sovereign's healing. Realizing his mistake he struggles to return to Graal Castle and finish his quest.

Later stories make Galahad, son of Lancelot, the true hero of the Holy Grail. But even though his role has been diminished, Percival remains an important character and is one of two knights (along with Boors) who accompanies Galahad to the Grail castle, finishing with his demand.

In the early versions of the story, Percival's beloved is Blanchefleur and he becomes king of Corbenic, after having healed the Fisher King. Already in later versions, he remains a virgin and dies after having found the Grail. In the version of Wolfram von Eschenbach the son of Percival is Lohengrin, the Knight of the Swan.
