Sir Bedívere

His historical counterpart would have been born in 495 AD, he appears for the first time in the poem "Culhwch and Olwen" as the most handsome knight of the Round Table. Along with Sir Kay (or Cai Hir, the "tall knight"). According to the poem, although he possessed only one of his hands, no warrior drew blood faster than he on the battlefield.

There are also notes on his appearance at the battle of Tryfrwyd ("By the hundred they fell before Bedwyr Bedrydant" for "Furious was his nature with shield and sword"). Geoffrey of Monmouth placed him as Duke of Normandy and a constant companion and "right arm" of King Arthur, and Bedivere was the only one of the Knights to survive the battle against Sir Mordred at Slaughterbridge, near Tintagel.

In his adventures, he faced the giant of Mount St. Michel and participated in several military campaigns, having perished in one of these battles. The wealth of detail about his life suggests that Bedivere was inspired by a real person.

In Thomas Mallory's tales, he survives until the end of the saga; when King Arthur was mortally wounded, he ordered Bedivere to return his Excalibur sword to the Lady of the Lake in Dosmary Pool, near Tintagel. After throwing it back to the lake, an arm emerged from the waters, picked up the sword and disappeared in the waters.

After Arthur's death, Bedivere became a hermit and remained so until his death.
