Sir Gaherís

  • Knights of the Round Table

At its origin, he was a secondary character called Gwalchafed, in Gallic and Celtic poems; later, in the Arthurian traditions, he is described as son of Lot and Morgause, and brother of Mordred, having been presented to the court very young. It was during one of these visits that his brother, Mordred, was conceived. Upon his father's death, Gaheris and his brothers are accepted into court and become knights. Gawain becomes Knight of the Round Table and Gaheris his squire. Many adventures go on until the brothers manage to avenge their father's death by murdering Lord Pellinore.

Gaheris was a close friend of Percival and aided Tristao in his problems with King Mark.
Gaheris was one of the most conquering knights: his official passion was the demoiselle of La Blanche, but other poems relate various affairs (of course he suffered from the same problem of Zeus and his lovers). Sir Gaheris is also portrayed as an extremely pious and careful knight with the poor.

Gaheris tried to persuade his brother Mordred not to reveal to Arthur the betrayal of Lancelot, but he could not. After the fall of Camelot, Gawain was appointed to be one of the executors of Guinevere but did not accept the position, suggesting his brothers Gaheris and Gareth. Gaheris accepted the job and was eventually killed by Lancelot when he rescued the queen.

Gaheris was buried in the castle of Dover.
