Story

The Gargoyles are statues of monstrous creatures, sometimes resembling deformed birds, or gigantic bats, like a mixture of various beings, forming a grotesque sculpture.
Some chimeras or grotesque figures function as artistic and ornamental functions. They are said to scare away and protect those they keep from any evil or harmful spirits.

Although widespread in the Middle Ages, the gargoyles appeared much earlier. Examples were found in ancient civilizations such as the Egyptian and others.

Gargoyles were placed on the roofs of Egyptian temples and their mouths served as water fountain. Similar examples were found in Greek temples, although the carved figures resembled a lion or other ferocious animal.

The gargoyle name is often attributed to St. Romanus or St. Romans. According to legend, he saved his country from a monster called Goji, sometimes called Gargoille, which means throat, in French.

Supposedly, the monster was so scary that it amazed the evil spirits. This fact made one believe that the monster was a protector and thus put carved figures similar to it in churches and other important constructions.
