Goliath

Los Seres - Gigantes

(1 Samuel 17: 4), which measured 2.83 meters (6 cubits and 1 span), which was called "exiled," or "diviner," according to the Bible it would have been a Gate warrior (1 Samuel 17: 4) . He would have participated in the episode of the battle between the Philistines and the people of Israel, having been confronted and killed by David.

History

According to the narration of the book of 1 Samuel, Goliath was a man of great stature from the city of Gate, and a soldier champion of the Philistines. There is no divergence between the scribes and narrators about their height: the oldest Bible, the scrolls of the Dead Sea (2nd century BC), as well as the historian Josephus and the Septuagint, and later (935 AD) the Codex Aleppo, all these concatenate that Goliath had the height of six cubits and a span (1 span of 25 cm) (2.83 meters). He is the tallest person who has records in the Scriptures. According to Reis, in the fight he had against David, he wore a bronze mail coat that weighed 5,000 cycles (57 kg). Since David was still a boy, probably only Goliath's mail coat was already reaching its weight. But David still had to fight with a warrior who carried a large shield for protection and a spear, whose iron point weighed 600 cycles (6 kilograms). His rod was described in the Bible as "axis of the weavers."

Shortly after David was anointed by Samuel, the Philistines assembled in Socho for a war against Israel, and then encamped in Ephes-Damim. Goliath challenged Israel with a loud voice to introduce a man to fight him in individual combat, the result would determine which army would become the servant of the other. His challenge lasted 40 days. But in the Israeli army there was no soldier with enough courage to face Goliath with his 2,83 meters of height, (1 covado 45 cm) even more being this one mercenary soldier trained and very well armed. because of their great stature, the Ennahim were recruited to serve as armies of other peoples (2 Samuel 21: 15-22). At this point in history there were no longer real giants but their descendants of smaller stature, including Goliath himself is not presented as a giant but rather a man of great stature which leads us to believe that the Jews knew how to distinguish the ancient giants from heights probably (Gen. 6.4, Nm 13.22, 32, 33, Dt 2.10, 11, 20).

When David learned what was happening he was outraged and accepted the Philistine's challenge. Saul's attempt to put his armor on David was unsuccessful because he had never used it. David was only with the sling and some smooth stones that he caught in a river near the encounter with Goliath.

Invoking the name of his gods for evil against David, Goliath laughed at him, asking if it was a dog to come to him with ropes, referring to the sling that David wore. David answered, "You come to me with the sword, and with the spear, and with the javelin: but I come to you with the name of the LORD of hosts, the God of the bands of the fighters of Israel, of whom you have mocked."
Hastening, David took a stone and threw it with the sling, and it penetrated Goliath's forehead. It should not have killed him instantly because the Bible says that when Goliath fell to the ground, David hurried, took the sword of Goliath and gave him death 'definitely' cutting off his head.

When they saw their champion dead, the Philistines fled, but were pursued and decimated to their city.

And David took the Philistine's head and brought it to Jerusalem, and his weapons he put in his tent.

In II Samuel 21, it refers to the existence of Lami, the Brother of Goliath, who, like him, would also be a giant.
