Biography

The archaeological discoveries of Tell Tell al-Qadi and the Moabite Stone where quotes are found to the Kingdom of Judah and the House of David, placing the kingdom of Judah and the David dynasty in an extrabiblical historical context, demystifying the Enlightenment belief, which put them as part of biblical mythology (see Biblical and Critical Bible Criticism), but the character's life, David, can only be described through the biblical account.

The books of Samuel (I Samuel and II Samuel) deal with his personal and monarchical life. David, is described as being a man of valor, calling to Saul's attention for his ability as a musician, was a harpist, which earned him a place in the royal circle, later with the battles against the Philistines was recognized as a great warrior and Saul gave Michal his daughter, as wife, Jonathan the son of the king, became an intimate friend. As for the description of David as a man of war, he fought the Philistines in the city of Keilah, but when Saul saw him as a rebel, he fled to the desert, a place on the fringes of society, David gathered a small army, mercenary, serving as a mercenary to the Philistines (king Achish of Gath) and defending the city of Ziclag for a year and four months, it was at this time that David gained fame and became truly an adversary for Saul (as leader) and a force to be feared by the Philistines, who even called him king of the land. With the death of Saul and three of his sons at the battle of Gilboa, Israel had lost part of the territory west of the Jordan, while Ishbosheth, Saul's successor, was eastward in Mahanaim with the help of Abner the general of Saul . In Samuel (II Sm 4), Ishbosheth's death was reported by his own men, David executing them, as he did with the Amalekite who had killed Saul, as a result, David eventually became king of Judah and anointed Israel in Hebron.

David consolidated the Unified Kingdom of Israel, after defeating the Canaanite tribe of the Jebusites, made Jerusalem its political capital, religious center and royal residence, transferring to it the old national sanctuary, the Ark of the Covenant, in a solemn procession with sacrifices, which he himself figured prominently as a worshiper and celebrant. In memory of their migrations in the desert, the Ark was initially placed in a tent. David thought of building a magnificent temple for him in Jerusalem, building that was in charge of his son, the great King Solomon

According to the biblical narrative, King David successfully led the people on excursions against other peoples, made political alliances with other kings and chiefs, one of these alliances being sealed by marriage and bringing together a harem. In Jerusalem, David appointed a council of sages, created an army that included an honor guard and a royal guard for the palace. To this end David subjected the tribes of Israel (Judah, it was not taxed) by taxing them to fuel the armies and construction projects. It created a feudal system of partition of lands under the crown, thus replacing the old system of tribal divisions.

David and Goliath

David was a great war hero, with his first record as a teenager.
Goliath of Gath was the champion of the Philistines, who had camped between Shochoh and Azekha against Saul and the men of Israel arranged for battle in the valley of Elah. He is described as having six cubits and a span of height (about 3 meters), bearing on his head a bronze helmet, and wearing a chain mail weighing five thousand bronze shekels (approximately 60 kg). Insolently challenging Israel to appoint one of them to face him in single combat, on condition that the people that the champion was slain would become slaves (and the men of Israel feared their great strength). Meanwhile, David is sent by his father with some provisions for his brethren, soldiers of Israel. The young man is outraged, and says "Who is this Goliath, to confront the army of the living God?" Saul, without option, hears David and sends him to face the giant Goliath. The young little David, picks up his sling (gun that works as a stone thrower) and chooses five smooth stones from the creek to be used against his powerful opponent. With a launch, David hits him in the head between his eyes. With this blow the giant collapses, goes there and rips off his head and takes it to his King Saul.
