Fafnir
Creatures - Dragons
In Nordic mythology, Fafnir is the son of the dwarf king Hreidmar and brother of Regin and Otaro.
In the Saga of the Volsungens, he is a dwarf with a powerful arm and a fearless soul. One day, Loki sees Otaro - son of Hreidmar - with a fish, confuses him with an otter and kills him. After Otaro is killed, Hreidmar receives the Andvarinaut as a reward, a cursed ring. Fafnir and Regin kill their father for gold, but Fafnir decides to take complete possession of the treasure and becomes a dragon. Regin sends his apprentice Siegfried to kill him, and the young man departs to the enemy's den. Siegfried then kills the dragon Fafnir with a blow from his Gram sword, and bathed with the blood of the enemy to have invulnerability, except for one of the shoulders, covered by a leaf. Regin then asks Sigurdo the heart of Fafnir, and Siegfried also drinks some of the blood of the dragon, gaining the ability to understand the language of the birds. The birds warn him to kill Regin, who plotted the young man's death. Siegfried fulfills the request, kills Regin and consumes the heart of Fafnir, receiving the gift of wisdom.
- Its history appears in the four operas of Richard Wagner known like The Ring of the Nibelung (Der ring des Nibelungen), under name Fafner. However, it begins as a giant instead of a dwarf, before it becomes a dragon.
