The word "espionage" comes from the French word espionner, which means "spy", and from the classic Italian spione. The word spy originates from several ancient words meaning "to look and to observe", as in the Latin specere or in the Anglo-Norman espier.

Espionage according to Sun Tzu, in The Art of War, is a permissible act between belligerents, nations, guerrilla groups at war and / or guerrilla, and consists in the practice of obtaining information of a confidential nature concerning governments or organizations, without the authorization military, political, economic, scientific, technological and / or social advantages.
