As a tenth work, Eurystheus decided to increase the difficulty: Hercules was to bring down the whole herd of Gerion (Gérion), which had two legs just like other people, but from the waist the body branched into three trunks with three heads and six arms. It was said that the cry of Geriao was equivalent to that of ten thousand warriors, and that he liked to howl in the midst of the storm to stifle the thunder of Zeus's thunder.
He also used to climb a rock near the sea to defy the screams of those who had the courage to face him; his challenge echoed at great distances and may have been heard by a doormat of Euristeu, inspiring him in this task. The son of Crisaor (descendant of the gorgon Medusa) and Calirrhoe (daughter of the Titans Ocean and Thetis), lived on a mythical island near Libya called Erithia, with the giant shepherd Euthydron and Ortro, the two-headed dog and dragon's tail of the famous Cerberus), who protected their flocks. His cattle were peculiar: deep red with broad foreheads and slender legs.
On her solitary journey, Hercules had encountered numerous dangers among thieves and wild animals. It is said that upon arriving in Gibraltar, the hero worked hard to open a wide channel between the Mediterranean and the Ocean to allow the passage of ships. (Some legends say that Hercules used his strength to separate Mount Calpe from Mount Abily and thus open the strait now called the Pillars of Hercules or Straits of Gibraltar.)
With the boat, Hercules quickly arrived at the island and was soon received by Ortro, but the stories say that only a blow of his olive tree fell over the bicephalous dog. Pastor Euthydan raised a huge stone to throw at the hero, who was faster and flared him. The raised stone eventually crushed the shepherd.
Listening to the fight, Gerio wore three armor, three helmets and took three shields and three spears to face the hero. Realizing that it would be difficult to defeat the monster in hand-to-hand combat, Hercules drew his bow and killed Geriao with his poisoned arrows. Some versions say that Hercules tore Geriao in three parts after a fierce fight, symbolizing the victory over vanity, debauchery and despotic domination.
