Odin

Gods - Norse Mythology

(The main source on Norse mythology is the Poetic Edda a set of poems that were passed by oral tradition and recited at the feasts of the Nordic tribes.)

Odin was the son of Bor and Bestla (giant), but there is not much information about his parents. He had two brothers, Vé and Vili, who presented humanity with gifts such as speech, emotions, among others.

However, to gain wisdom, Odin had to offer one eye to Mimir, the guardian. So he was able to drink the liquid from Mimir's magical well and obtain knowledge.

As Odin has the power to see everything that goes on in the nine worlds, he was envious of the knowledge contained in the Yggdrasill tree. So he struck himself with a spear and hung for nine days on the branches of this tree.

After the ninth day he understood the secret of the runes which gave him several skills like:

• Heal;
• Free yourself from any difficulty;
• Divert arrows that are aimed at him;
• Calm winds, waves and storms;
• Make a warrior invincible;
• Take on any appearance: old, young, adult.

Odin is the lord in Asgard and lives in the palace Valaskjálf, in a high tower, where is his magical throne, called Hlidskialf. From there he can contemplate the nine worlds.

Odin does not need to eat, he only drinks wine and mead, a special liqueur. All the foods that are put on your plate it gives to your wolves.

Animals

• Horse: Ride a fast eight-legged horse, Sleipnir, considered the most beautiful of all horses;
• Crows: he is always accompanied by two crows, Hugin and Munin, who spend the day flying around the world and in the afternoon come sit and tell the god everything they saw in their wanderings;
• Wolves: Geri and Freki are the two wolves that accompany him wherever he goes. On the battlefields, the animals take advantage of feeding on the corpses.

Weapon

Odin wields the Gungnir spear that has runes engraved on its metal. When the god throws her weapon, she never misses the target and always returns to her hands.

Family

Odin is married to Frigga (or Freya) and is the father of countless gods like Thor, Baldr, Vali, Hoder, Njord, Herod, Bragi, Tyr, Heindal, Vidor, and the Valkyries.

Death

At the end of time, a great battle will take place in Ragnarok between the gods and the deceased warriors who live in Valhalla.

Odin knows he will be killed by the wolf Fenrir, at the Battle of Ragnarok, when several gods too, including his son Thor, will perish.

Natural disasters will cover the land, however, will not be the end, as the surviving couple of humans will repopulate it.

In Romanticism

During the nineteenth century, with the romantic movement, the Germanic legends regained their popularity through publications.

The works of the German composer Richard Wagner (1813-1883) and his cycle "The Ring of the Nibelungs" (The Ring of the Nibelungs), where he tells the saga of the gods through four operas, contributed to its diffusion.
