Athene Noctua

Weapons - Divine

In Greek mythology, the Galician owl (Athene noctua) traditionally represents or accompanies Athena, the virgin goddess of wisdom, or Minerva, her syncretic incarnation in Roman mythology. Due to this association, the bird often referred to as the "Athena owl" or "Owl of Minerva" - has been used as a symbol of knowledge, wisdom, insight and erudition throughout the Western world.

Owl of Minerva

Birds, being considered the beings closest to the gods, were, according to their characteristics and attributions, associated with them. The sovereign eagle accompanied the mighty Zeus, the imposing peacock, his consort and protector of legitimate loves: the goddess Hera. To the attentive owl was the company of the wise Athena.

We see the image of the owl, symbol of vigilance constantly alert, in the oldest Athenian coins. The owl, in Greek gláuks "bright, sparkling", sees in the darkness. One of Athena's epithets is "the glaciated eyes" (greenish).

In Latin it is Noctua, "bird of the night". Nocturne, related to the moon, the owl incorporates the solar opposite. Notice that Athena is the sister of Apollo (Sun). It is a symbol of reflection, of rational knowledge allied to the intuitive one that allows to dominate the darkness. Although there is a strong association of this bird with darkness and dark feelings, what is natural to a nocturnal being, the fact that it was (due to its specific characteristics) attributed to the goddess Athena also made it a symbol of knowledge and wisdom for many people.

The owl is an excellent connoisseur of the secrets of the night. As the men sleep, she stays awake, wide-eyed, bathed by the rays of her inspiring Moon. Watching the cemeteries or listening to whispers in the pitch, this dark ambassador knows everything that has happened, becoming in many cultures a profound and powerful knower of the occult.

There was an ancient tradition according to which who as owl meat participates in their divinatory powers, their gifts of foresight and foreknowledge. The owl thus became a traditional attribute of the mantas, of those who practice mântica, the art of divinatio, of divination, symbolizing to them the gift of clairvoyance.

Here is the bird of the goddess of Wisdom and Justice: attentive owl, whose neck rotates 360 degrees, possessing luminous eyes that, like Zeus, see "the whole." Because of all these attributes, the Owl also symbolizes Philosophy, Teachers and our proposal of Knowledge Without Borders: integrating all forms of knowledge with a look at The Whole.
