Ortros

Creatures - Greek Mythology 

 

Orthos (Greek: Ὄρθος, transl .: Orrthos) was a bicephalous dog of Greek mythology. Considered the most fierce guard dog of antiquity, its tail was a serpent.

His mother, Equidna, was a serpent-woman and her father, Typhon, had a horse's head. Órtros was the brother of the Cerberus dog, who guarded Hades.

 

History

 

Órtros was a pet of Geriao, a giant of three bodies, six wings and six arms, shepherd of one of the biggest and best herds of all Africa. Órtros watched his red cattle on the island of Erithia, where Heracles killed him, to fulfill his tenth work.

Some say that the original owner of Ortros was Atlas, the titan who carried Heaven on his shoulders. It is said that after being killed by Heracles, Ortros ascended into the heavens and became the star Sirius (Star of the Dog), which is the brightest star in the night sky.
