Lion of Nemean

Creatures - Greek Mythology

The Lion of Nemea (in modern Greek: Λέων της Νεμέας, in Latin: Leo Nemaeus), in Greek mythology, was a creature that inhabited the plains of Nemeia in Argólida, terrorizing the whole region.

The terrible beast could not be killed by a normal man for having leather of impenetrable material for mortals (humans), and all who tried to fight him were completely terrified by his roar, which could be heard from miles away. Moreover, no weapon could penetrate the animal's hide, and all who tried to kill him with spears or arrows were eventually devoured.

History

The origin of the Nemean Lion is controversial. According to some versions, it was had the son of Typhon and Equidna. Other legends give it as a result of the union of Equidna and her own son Ortros, the two-headed dog. Another version is that it would be the son of Cerbero with Chimera, and therefore grandson of Typhoon and Equidna.

In the first of her famous twelve works, Hercules received from Eurystheus the mission of defeating the Lion of Nemeia, to end the devastation that this caused. At first Hercules tried to strike him with his arrows, uselessly. Angrily, the hero applied with his club a blow so tremendous on the head of the animal that it fell unconscious. After strangling him, Hercules extracted the animal's hide with its own claws, since no iron weapon could cut or pierce it.

From there Hercules began to use his skin as a protective cloak, with the lion's head serving as a helmet.
