Sleipnir

Creatures - Mounts

In Norse mythology, Sleipnir is the magic mount of Odin. The legendary 8-legged Black Horse was the fastest horse in the world, riding on land, in the sea and in the air. Its name means soft or the one that flat in the air. It is also associated with slim and slippery words.

The birth of Sleipnir

Thor, the Giant Slayer, was far from Asgard killing giants in the north, when a hrimthurs, disguised as a human mason, offered to rebuild the wall around Asgard in exchange for the sun, the moon, and the goddess Freya. The gods accepted, believing it to be a good deal, since part of the wall was already falling apart. In addition, the giant would need to complete its work in just six days, as Thor would return by the end of this term and kill him.

The giant asked only one question: could he use his gray stallion, Svadilfari (translating, "slave", or possibly "doomed"). Loki quickly accepted the agreement, before any other god could object. Using the stallion, the giant began building the wall, and would receive the sun, the moon and Freya. The gods, seeing this, were furious with Loki, and said that if they lost, they would torture him eternally (which happened in another way). Then, while Svadilfari was carrying the last brick to complete the wall, Loki turned into a beautiful white mare, and drew the stallion away, annoying the giant, who began to destroy the wall with his fury. Thus, while destroying the wall, Thor appeared and crushed the giant with his hammer Mjolnir. Loki later gave birth to Sleipnir, Odim's mount, who is a descendant of the gray stallion Svadilfari and Loki while he was a beautiful white mare.
