The Hydra of Lerna (in Greek old: Ὕδρα), in the Greek mythology, was a monster, son of Typhoon and Echidna, that inhabited a swamp next to the lake of Lerna, in the Argólida, today what would be equivalent to the Eastern coast of the Peloponnese region. The Hydra had a dragon body and several serpent heads. According to legend, the heads of the Hydra could regenerate; some versions say that when a head was cut, two grew in its place, but the first versions of the legend did not include that characteristic.
The Hydra was so poisonous that it killed men only with its breath and ate them; if someone came near her while she was sleeping, barely smelling her trace the person was already dying in terrible torment.
Death:
The Hydra was defeated by Héracles (Hercules, in Roman mythology), in his second work. Initially Héracles tried to crush the heads, but to each one that cut two arose in the place. He decided then to change tactics and, so that the heads did not regenerate, he asked the nephew Iolau to burn them with a bowl after the cut, thus healing the wound. Then left over the middle head, considered immortal. Heracles cut and buried the last head with a huge stone. Thus, the monster was killed.
According to tradition, the monster was created by Hera to kill Heracles. When he realized that Heracles was going to kill the serpent, Hera sent him the help of a huge crab, but Heracles trampled it and the animal became the constellation of crab (or Cancer).
Instructed by Athena, Heracles, after killing the Hydra, took the opportunity to bathe his arrows in the blood of the monster, to make them poisonous. Euristeu did not consider this work valid (Héracles had to fulfill ten works, and not twelve), because the hero had help.
Heracles died later in Phrygia, because of the poison of the Hydra: after mortally wounding the Centaur Nesso with arrows poisoned in the blood of the Hydra, he gave his blood to Dejanira, saying it was a love potion, to be used in the clothes . Dejanira believed, and when he became jealous of Hiole, he used Nesso's blood to bathe the clothes of Heracles, who felt unbearable burning pains, preferring suicide on the cremation pyre.
